What safety gear is needed when riding a motorcycle?

| May 2, 2021 | Uncategorized

With summer almost here, riders throughout Washington state will soon take to their motorcycles once again. As a safe, responsible rider, you know the importance of following traffic rules and regulations. However, there are other steps you can take to protect yourself.

According to Washington State Department of Licensing, riding with the right gear is also crucial. Here are a few pieces of equipment you must have every time you ride.

Helmets

According to the law, you must wear a helmet at all times when on your motorcycle. Helmets greatly reduce the risk of death or serious injury during a crash. While there are many types of helmets to choose from, full-face models offer the most protection. Make sure the brand you choose has a DOT-approved label, as that means the helmet meets current safety standards.

Eyewear

Goggles protect your eyes from flying debris, which is why Washington state mandates that all riders wear some kind of eye protection. However, helmets with face shields are best for all-over protection.

Boots

Boots must offer proper ankle support for operating a motorcycle. Reinforced toe protection is also crucial to protect against foot injuries. Durable, slip-resistant soles are a must for optimum traction while riding. Never wear flimsy shoes or footwear that exposes your feet, such as sandals.

Jackets and Pants

Sturdy materials are a must for jackets and pants suited to riding. In the event of a crash, rugged material like leather can protect your body from scrapes, bruises, and lacerations. Clothing should fit well, meaning it is snug but not too tight. Steer clear of loose clothing, as it can impede movement.

While you cannot always avoid accidents on the road, you can do your best to limit their damaging effects. Watching out for careless drivers is also important, as many motorists fail to notice the presence of motorcycles on the road.
