What should you do after a car accident?

Aug 9, 2022 | Car Accidents

Being a safe and responsible driver is a must for all who share the road. By remaining alert to your surroundings and following traffic laws, you can greatly reduce your risk of a collision.

However, there is not much you can do about negligent drivers, who partake in dangerous behaviors that can harm themselves and others. While you cannot always avoid accidents, here are a few steps to take after a car crash.

Check for injuries

The first step is to check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Keep in mind that head and neck injuries may present days or even weeks later after a crash. Even if you do not require immediate medical treatment, you should be assessed by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Move your vehicle

If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road. Remaining in the flow of traffic can put you and others at risk of further damage. If it is safe to do so, place warming triangles or flares around your vehicle to alert other drivers. If you are not able to take this step, turn on your hazard lights.

Contact the police

The police can help redirect traffic around the accident scene, but they will also create an accident report. This report will contain unbiased information on exactly what occurred, and who may be at fault. This information will prove valuable to the insurance company. It can also help you if the other driver claims they did not behave negligently.

Exchange information

The first step is to check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Keep in mind that head and neck injuries may present days or even weeks later after a crash. Even if you do not require immediate medical treatment, you should receive an assessment from a medical professional as soon as possible.

Try to remain calm and behave in a polite manner. Make sure you request a copy of the police report and call your insurance company as soon as possible to make them aware of the situation.
