Key points of defensive driving may help you avoid a collision

On Behalf of | Mar 14, 2023 | Car accidents

Every day the average driver faces potential hazards that come in the shape of other drivers. This latter group may be reckless, blowing through a stop sign or traffic signal, distracted by the phone in their hand or the food they eat, drunk — swerving in the traffic lane or driving on the wrong side of the road, or angry because of something that happened earlier in the day.

So how do you deal with these dangerous situations and dangerous drivers? The main things are to always remain alert of your surroundings and focus on defensive driving. Doing so just may help you avoid a collision that could lead to life-changing injuries.

Understand that other drivers make mistakes

Whether on a commute to work, a road trip with family, or an errand, it is important to focus on safe driving. This includes the all-important defensive driving. Here are some of the key factors related to defensive driving:

  • Remain alert: Keep your eyes moving, watch the road, and other drivers, and look in your rearview and side mirrors. You just may spot a potential danger and avert a crash.
  • Understand that other drivers make mistakes: Anticipate that certain drivers may be reckless, break traffic rules and have little regard for other drivers. Maintain a safe distance from them.
  • Follow at a safe distance: This is often when the three- or four-second driving rule comes into play. This may reduce the chance of a collision, especially when the driver ahead of you abruptly brakes or stops.
  • Drive the speed limit: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28% of fatal crashes and 13% of crashes with injury in 2020 were caused by speeding. The highest age groups involved in fatal crashes involving speeding were males in the 15 to 20 age group (35%), females in the 15- to 20-year and 21- to 24-year age groups (both at 18%).
  • Buckle up: Wearing a safety belt is the law and doing so just may save your life or prevent injury caused by a negligent driver.

Take these pointers seriously and follow them whenever you get behind the wheel.

It makes all the difference

There already are enough aggressive, selfish and reckless drivers on the road. Subscribing to defensive driving will help you avoid these drivers. Staying safe and alert can make all the difference.
